I wrote "That Mystery" with Mark Germino. He's a true poet...and I love this song. It seems to have a "message" but also a sense of humor. For a while it was called "C'est La Vie" but in a last minute bolt of inspiration I rewrote the chorus and it just came into full bloom. Sometimes songs don't finished getting dressed until years after you start trying to tie their shoes and get them out the door.
This was recorded pretty fast in my Treehouse studio with Trina Shoemaker engineering. It just fell together so beautifully. I had my nephew Tripp Dudley add percussion and I layered Bozuki and Ukelele picking away. I even played the bongo drums! And I also called in Bill Lloyd to play some bass. He's got a sense of joy to his playing that I find really wonderful.
Well my heart don't care if my feet say no
When the jet stream's rockin' and the four winds blow
All the way from Paris to the hills of Tennessee
Baby, life's not fair it's only what it's meant to be
Say that, play that, pray that Mystery
Well my mouth says never but my soul says now
I got a portable devil and a sacred cow
Hare Krishna dances...Buddha smiles eternally
Holy Mother Mary...gently waving back to me
Angels, church bells sing that mystery
There's a quiet void of silence in the stillness
Of the emptiness I've found
Louder than the jingle jangle clanging bang
Of chatter going down....comin' 'round...
Well my life is a rumor but my death rings clear
Like a bell in the ether of the atmosphere
As I watch my future turn the corner by degrees
I could miss forever like the forest for the trees
Chase that place- that grace- that mystery
